Extend Rather Than Move Trend
Given the state of the property market it’s not surprising that homeowners are opting to extend their property rather than attempt a house move. The past few years have seen a huge upswing in planning applications for all types of home extensions right across the UK as a direct result of the difficulties in selling a property or finding mortgages to fund a new property.
Recent trends also pick up on the fact that more an more homeowners are taking the long term view with their property and opting to carry out major improvement and extension works even if the numbers don’t add up.
Tom Norris from Price Devils, the UK’s leading Home Improvement Price Comparison Site, says “It’s about time that homeowners stopped looking at their property exclusively as a line on a spreadsheet; always thinking about the short term gain. Thinking more long term allows us to be free to create more desirable homes that will undoubtedly bring far more pleasure and even if the numbers don’t add up just now its only a matter of time before you will be back in the black.”
Location Location Location
I’m confident that you’ve heard it said time and time again that location is one of the key elements with regard to any property. That is very true in the short term when it comes to getting your money back on home improvements but even if your property is not in the most desirable area you are still likely to get your money back in the long term providing the work carried out suits the property and is done to a decent standard.
Having said that there is of course such a thing as over development so don’t get entirely carried away. For example if you have already added a large kitchen extension to your property then you are unlikely to get all the costs back on your loft conversion unless you are in a really good area.
Drop into your local estate agents and tell them what you are considering and I’m confident they will be a guiding light as to whether you proceed.

Loft Extensions - Some of the Benefits
The major difference between a loft extension and other home extensions is that in most cases you are creating additional bedrooms rather than day to day living space. Of course there are many loft conversions that make excellent play rooms and home offices but primarily the main motive for moving up into the attic is to create an additional bedroom or two.
En-suite bathrooms are also increasingly popular as part of the loft conversion pack. It makes perfect sense because if you turn a 3 bedroom house into a 5 bedroom house then you need to avoid having a queue for a pee. It also provides the opportunity to have a lovely en-suite bathroom giving the whole loft area a touch of luxury.
Loft rooms are excellent when it comes to getting a bit of peace and quite as noise doesn’t transmit in the same manner as it does from the ground floor to the 1st floor. This is mainly because the insulation and build techniques are different but also because there is usually less noise generated on the 1st floor bedrooms.
Older loft conversions, 60’s & 70’s, were built with little or no insulation and as a result he loft were freezing in the winter and incredibly stuffy in the summer. In other words they were rooms to avoid unlike their modern counterpart.
Modern loft conversions are far more energy and insulation conscious and offer up the warmest rooms in the winter and the coolest in the summer. It’s basically simple in that insulation that serves to keep the cold out in the winter also serves to keep the heat out in the summer.
Loft windows have also moved on considerably and you can now group windows together providing far more light and the illusion of more space. In some cases you can have have loft balconies added on to provide a real touch of luxury.
